Ever since I was a teen (I'm 34 now -- ancient!) I've wondered why radio stations have "morning shows" Monday-Friday. The LAST thing I want to hear if I'm trying to wake myself up, or trying to drive in a slow/stressful commute, is a morning show! MUSIC gets me motivated and energized, not yakking! WHAT is so appealing about hearing DJ's talk amongst themselves, tell long stories/jokes, laugh hysterically, complain about their lives, or tease callers?!?

I know these days, it's kind of a non-issue, since most cars have CD players, and at home lots of folks use Internet and/or satellite radio (along with stereos, CDs, etc.) while preparing in the morning. However, sometimes it's still nice to listen to a bunch of random radio songs, where you've NO idea what you're going to hear next. (Especially for me, since I don't have satellite radio at home, and my car only plays the radio & cassettes).

Anyone else hate radio morning shows? Or do you like them? In either case, why? Thanks :)

OOPS! I should have clarified this. Sorry. :) I am not referring to stations that are "talk radio" or "news radio" formats. Obviously if you like talk, you'll enjoy it any time of day.

I am referring only to stations that normally play MUSIC, except for a period of 3 to 4 hours on weekday mornings, when they play either no music, or only a little music -- with everything else being DJs talking, joking, complaining, yakking or whatever.

I like them only if they are funny and entertaining. Not boring and stupid and annoying. I need a good laugh on the way to work in the mornings. Not too much music and not too much talk on the morning drive for me.

Living in and now still near Chicago all my live , morning talk shows come and go. I start work long before some talk show hosts are even thinking about waking up. Some talk show host have gone as far as getting their listeners to do very dangerous things for concert tickets or even had phone lines tied up for hours during contests(large money prizes) Your right about the choices now for listening pleasures, just this year Chicago got its first DJ free radio station , and guess what... I set it on my radio! News, weather or sports can all be done in one minute now but why are commercials getting longer and longer and I even found that they( radio stations) play them almost at the same time. I dislike the fact they seem to think that everyone needs to know their business or something they find funny appeals to all. If I had a job that got me in my car at the time most radio talk show were on then I'd guess I listen to the DJ free station more often...the only bad part with that is the station plays a wide variety of music and at my age 44 (way more ancient then you : ) ) some of that thump-thump and heavy metal just doesn't fit between my speakers. Good Luck...

Well, since there are so many radio stations around the nation, not everyone is going to like the radio shows of their own particular area (I don't have satellite either...it sucks). Personally, I like the morning show of the station I listen to (107.7FM in San Fran) because they do stupid stuff all the time and it helps me wake up...sort of. Although putting on a station of a type of music would help too. I guess you could call it a matter of preference..and yeah listening to random songs is great too. (I wish I could drive though..lol)

Why I like morning shows (and talk radio at any time of day)

Listening to a conversation engages my thoughts in a way very different from music. Talk radio eases stress for me because following the hosts' conversations distracts me from my own internal dialogue.
If I am in a bad mood, I do not want to listen to depressing music because it makes me feel worse. If I listen to upbeat music, it feel disingenuous.

Also, I like sports, and that form of talk radio is generally available at any time of day.

Hate them.
And for some reason, the token loud lady on the morning show always has an obnoxious laugh that she practices every 47 seconds.
I stick to the CD player.
