ISBN stands for "International Standard Book Number." Since a CD is not a book, they use the UPC (Universal Product Code)

As others have stated, it's usually above or near the bar code.
The purpose is simply to catalog and track all the media out there. Often there's more than one version of a song or one printing of a book, and the code narrows it down to a particular item. The catch is places like Amazon use ASIC (Amazon Standard Indentification Number), which further confuses matters.

Try running the item you are looking for through B&N or Amazon by title or artist and see what code it gives you. Chances are you'll find it.

An isbn # is the number below the bar code that the cashier scans. Flip the CD over it should be on the back. Stores use the numbers to keep track of the items in stock. I used to work at a college bookstore, and we knew if a book was used or not by looking at the isbn. We also used isbn numbers to look up book in the computer system and see if we had certain books in our inventory. I know with books it was good to know the number because you might get the wrong edition.

There should be an isbn on your cd.

The ISBN number is located above the scan bar on the back of the CD. It is used to identify and catalog the CD.

originally for printed pubs, it has been extended to other media,
while it is possible to not have, virtually no one will know it exists.
