You have a constitutional right to bear arms (keep a gun at home). You don't need to ask permission. If you have to use it, is when it can get dicier. Different cities handle it differently. Most states will now let you buy a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Take one of these safety courses, buy your permit and relax

A gun is only as dangerous as you make it. I live in America. My husband and I own several guns, for hunting, competition and for home defense.
If you are a law abiding American citizen who can pass the background checks, there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to keep a gun (or several, if you like) in your home.

This is America and you can keep a gun at home providing you are a law-abiding citizen. I not sure but I think convicted felons would not be allowed to legally have a gun. I have several ans they are kept in a locked closet until I need them.
