Ok, I have never watched the show, but I was wondering...if he really is a sponge and he lives underwater, why doesn't he get all big and swollen?

think he is already swollen.saw an episode whereby he cried buckets & shrank
guess since he's supposed to be a live sponge capable of thinking & with motor skills & all,he is able to control his water & air intake
in 1 episode spongebob absorbed a bathtub of water trying to make gary his snail bathe

Sponge Bob lives under water and he doesn't get swollen becase he's a cartoon.

Because what you see is already swollen. If he was to go out of the water and dry, you would see a skinnier Sponge Bob.

I have watched that show and thought the same. I also wonder why they can have fire underwater, and they have waves and oceans underwater..but then again it is just a cartoon. :)

They even play games with the fact that they are underwater, as they go to a beach where there are waves!

He all ready is. You should see him out of the water! Any sponge has a max. amount of water that it can contain and then it doesn't get any bigger.
