Yes, I know what NIMBY stands for. You probably don't want anyone answering the question who doesn't know.
This questions seems rather straightforward not having the background of the classroom discussions that I assume this is related to.
NIMBY Ecology - no mercury plant near me so that it doesn't poison my children and cause cancer and infertility in my family.
NIMBY Economy - no Wal-Mart near me as it attracts a certain class of people and will lower my house value. No one wants to live near a discount chain as it lowers the 'class' of the neighborhood. It also increases traffic, making it harder to get places, making it more dangerous for my family, and possibly drawing in thieves who are drawn to crowds. This will in turn lower property values, crashing the local housing economy.

Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment, "what lives where and why". It is about where animals and plants are found and how they interact with each other and their environment. Their environment has biological features - other plants and animals, including people. It also has physical features, such as temperature and rainfall. Animals and plants have very complex relationships with their surroundings.
Economic botany is broadly defined as the study of the relationship between people and plants. This interdisciplinary study encompasses the fields of anthropology and botany as it explores the countless ways humans employ plants for food, medicine, textiles, shelter and more. Today economic botany continues to make significant contributions to anthropology, botany and environmental conservation. Economic botanists explore the interface between people and plants to describe the cultural uses of plants, explain the origin of specific useful plants and develop strategies for the sustainable use of plant resources. These scientists have studied the great variety of ways that people use plants.
An economy is a set of human and social activities and institutions related to the production, distribution, exchange and consumption of goods and services.

Some people will choose jobs over the enviroment no questions asked. NIMBY can refer to anything one does not want near them, prison, factory, nuclear plant, etc.

I think you are looking at the same mindset regardless of whether you're dealing with ecology or economy. People believe in the idea of conservation, saving the whales and balancing the budget. But NIMBYism goes further than the back yard.. People are saying, "All this stuff is well and good, but don't make me change my standard of living to get it done."
