I have a old overgrown 20 year old bird of paradise. I would like to remove it and plant something else there instead. I would appreciate any sound, logical or helpful advise on how to go about doing this properly. PLEASE HELP!!!

20 years???? And you're willing to kill it?
It's a beautiful plant. Let it live til it dies naturally

Put it on eBay. Rather than having a shipping charge, just list it as Pick Up Only. There are probably quite a few people that would like to have it, and you could get some $$$'s out of the deal.

A lot of back breaking digging. That is how I removed my bird of paradise a few years ago.

If you're in the U.S., put an ad on the Craig's list site for the city nearest you, and give it to the first person who will come and dig it up. I'm near Seattle, and I'd love to have something like that! You might also contact a zoo or botanical garden to see if they want it.

Try placing an ad in local ad offering the plant for free to anyone who will come and dig it up. Quite often a local landscaper will respond. In my area (socal) there are a few free places to place ads (i.e. the Greensheet ) and online you can use the recycler.com

http://www.recycler.com/

Or look in phone book and/or local ads for yard cleanup/hauling services

Have it dug up and sell it on E-Bay....I have seen the prices of year old plants...this one should be worth about $500 plus shipping!

well first trim back any branches and then chop it down. then you have to use a stump removal product on it. and watch out those little trees that spring up they will spring up double after you shop it down. the rotting stuff takes a while but if you do it right you should be able to hit it with a sledge and it will fall apart

If you have a lawn service, or happen to see one working in your neighborhood, tell them that they can have it for free if they dig it up.
They are worth money, and it will be worth the trouble of digging it up for the price they can get for it.

I'll take it!! I would call your local Waste Management and ask when they take landscaping scrap and dispose of it that way-either that or give it away, maybe even try to sell it.
