Thanks for all the answers, some have asked for more details. I am using a gateway notebook with P4. The new RAM works indipendently, but when plugged along with the old one, only one of them is showing. The existing RAM says PC2100, while the new one is PC2700. I guess this difference may be the reason as some of you suggested.

The most likely explanation is that the RAM you added is incompatible to your laptop, like the previous posters have mentioned.

Check the compatibility of your new RAM on the internet. There should be a PCXXXX where XXXX may be 100, 133, 2100, 2700, 4200, etc. This tells you the speed of the RAM.

Then you have to make sure you have the right type - some RAMs have 144 pin, others have 200 pin.

You may want to provide us with more information - like the model of your Laptop, the type and model # of your RAM. It would really help us to help you.

Make sure you bought the right density RAM for the notebook. Some of the older notebooks require a Low Density to be compatible and the low density RAM usually costs more. Check with the place you bought it from to make sure it is the correct type for the laptop before buying it.

Did u install new RAM with old RAM? if yes then see whether the frequency of both RAM is same or not. If not then u have to replace the RAM.
If its single RAM then try to put it to other slot. If it doesnt work either then ur RAM may be corrupted.

If this is the only RAM card and if it has any problem it will give error mesage. If you added a new ram with the old one then try few things - use only the new one and see.

I presume you have tried rebooting. Was there any noise? Beeping would possible indicate a wrong or damaged/defective strip. Did you check to make sure you had the proper module to start with? Did you go back in and make sure it is seated properly?
