Okay, but then what happens? If the Iron Chef is beaten, does that mean s/he is no longer an iron chef or does that just mean the new chef is also an iron chef?

cG, I think you're right. I do need to watch it again. I've only seen it in bits in pieces here and there. Oops!

LOVE watching this show -- there are TWO different versions of Iron Chef

First Iron Chef was established in Japan -- three Iron Chefs (French Style, Chinese Style, Japanese Style) were chosen to compete against top chefs (one on one competitions) for each episode. The Winner was graded/determined on the same way "Iron Chef America" is graded -- the Judges would rate the dishes prepared based on Taste, Presentation, Creativity. Eventually, a 4th Iron Chef was added (Italian), and that show (I believe) lasted for 5 seasons.

"Iron Chef America" has 4 Chefs that compete against top chefs from America (and some from around the world), and this is very similar in set-up. The person who is sponsoring (Chairman) of Iron Chef America is the nephew of the Iron Chef Japan Founder.

I love watching this show "Iron Chef America" because the ingredients are all familiar to American Consumers -- and I can get some ideas on how to put new variations on my old recipies by watching the show -- and it actually inspires folks to add new ingredients as well as join in the fun.

Iron Chefs don't lose their status, nor are challengers elevated to being Iron Chefs. The Iron Chefs team are the best of the best, first in Japan and now in the US. The challengers are darn good and want to strut their stuff. The judges are a mixed bag of sometimes good and sometimes where did they find this guy.

As simply as possible, two "contenders" (a "champion" chef and an opponent) command their two kitchen teams to produce several (the winner is not necessarily the one who makes more) dishes using specific ingredients or motifs illustrated at the start of each episode. They are given an hour to do so. At the end of the hour, a panel of three judges is given the dishes to taste and comment upon. From here, the judges select the winner.
