Pancho Villa and his gang vandalized Columbus, N.M. Various reasons given for this attack were: Villa's men needed rations and supplies, frustration that the U.S. government officially supported Venustiano Carranza who was one of Villa's rivals, Germany put Villa up to it in hopes of getting the U.S.A. involved in Mexico thus keeping them out of WW I.
They never defeated the U.S. on it's on soil. What is true, however,is that U.S. General Black Jack Pershing did pursue Villa and his gang into Mexico, but was never able to capture him.

And to the people who said "What about Santa Ana?": Santa Ana fought against people who were by law naturalized Mexican in a place called Texas which was at the time part of Mexico. That was Texas Independence, from Mexico. Texas did not become one the the United States of America until several years later.
