DSL and Cable are both known as broadband. Cable is usually faster than DSL. Broadband options are limited to your cable company or telephone company. You have to be fairly close to a major telephone switch to get DSL.

It depends on what's offered where you are, who the provider is, and how you use it.

DSL/ADSL ranges from 128kbps to 8Mbps
Cable ranges from 512kbps to 20Mbps

They usually have slower upload speeds than download, often at a 1/4 ratio, though they sometimes offer balanced plans.

Other factors can vary, such as the responsiveness of the ISP's DNS system. I find around here that web browsing on my shop's 3Mbps Verizon DSL is much snappier than on my home's 4Mbps+ Adelphia cable modem because of Verizon's much more responsive DNS servers. For large downloads, though, the cable modem is much faster, especially in off-peak times when traffic is down and I get near 8Mbps. (That's another thing: on DSL your bandwidth is dedicated to you. On cable it's shared with your neighbors.)

Faster still is Verizon's FiOS with speeds from 5Mbps to 30Mbps, but that has limited availability at this point, along with early-adopter level pricing.

T1 only goes up to 1.544Mbps, by the way.

OC-48 (optical carrier) is pretty fast at 2.488Gbps, but the -192, -256, and -768 levels are faster at 10, 13.271, and 40Gbps respectively. :)

DSL *is* touted as broadband. Broadband cable is faster than DSL, though, at least under normal conditions.
