For 3 weeks my speedometer kept slipping. At first it wouldn't move at all and then it would reach the speed limit i was trying to go but then drop back down. My mechanic kept the car overnight to check it in the morning and said it was the speed sensor so he replaced it. It worked fine for one day but it's doing it again. He said to just deal with it if it happened again or else he will have to replace the transmission. Is that true? or could something else be wrong? The car has 181k miles on it and no the transmission has never had a tune up.

Do you have digital speedometer? If not then it would have a cable that runs from the transmission to the dash, and connects to the back of the speedometer. Two things; either the cable is not secure on the back side where it clips into the speedometer, and needs to be pushed back in until you hear it snap, or the gear on the extension housing of the transmission is slipping, broken or the clip has came out. Take it to a transmission shop, because the average mechanic won't know what to do to it. I don't think your vehicle has a digital readout type speedometer, but I could be wrong. If it has a hand that moves across a scale, then all the sensor does is tell the computer some shifting information, and does not control the speedometer. If it's front wheel drive it would be more difficult to deal with, but like I stated before, a transmission shop would know what to do, and give you a price on repairing it for you. Good Luck!

A. If the speedometer acts up the ECM will try to change things to make up for it. I would look at the speedometer first! It's probably electronic. There should be a speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor on the transmission right side housing. It may have a weak magnet in it or a bad connection. You would need to put it on a lift to check it properly.

my 1999 Cavalier does that...well while I am at a stop light the needle on the speedometer jumps up once in awhile...kinda bounces...just started a few weeks ago I noticed. No big deal for me....unless it drives different or the needle stops all together I would not worry about it...up to you. My check engine lights comes on every few hundred miles as well.... drives fine though so.....I clear it with a machine and it goes out.....couple weeks later.....back on again...dumbest thing. Will worry about that light next July when I have to get both inspections done...until then as long as it drives the same I will live with it.

is it the speedometer or the transmission slipping on it,,if its the speedometer on it you may need a new dash unit you didnt make much sense with the question,if its the transmission, actually slipping it may need to be serviced ,but you didnt say for sure really what it was,if it worked good for one day it may be the dash unit going bad on it ,,good luck i hope this help.s.

Try another mechanic! I had the same thing happen and it was the speedometer cable. Hundres less than a new tranny.

at times that's the transimission velocity sensor yet I actual have got here across it extra undemanding for the cavalier and sunfire to have a concern with the circuitry on the decrease back of the speedometer itself. the least confusing thank you to repair is to interchange the comprehensive speedo cluster which you will get inexpensively at any automobile wreckers for about $a hundred.

it probably doesnt have anything to do with the transmission. something must be wired wrong in the dash. try and bring it to another mechanic

If it was the tranny, you would have way more notice than just the speedo "slipping."

Most likely a wiring problem somewhere. Could be stripped or corroded somewhere and maybe moisture affects it. I dunno, but I'd have a different mechanic look at it.
