First, get yer ducks in a row
--do a Google on the town(s) you're interested in moving to (e.g, Fayetteville + newspaper). That search should point you towards a local newspaper where you can peruse the online classifieds for both jobs and places to live, rental prices, public transportation, etc.
--also, scanning the paper will also give you a sense of the community; read the business section for insights about the local economy since you don't want out of the frying pan and into the fire.
--another thing to keep in mind is that you may be entitled to unemployment benefits if the job loss was not your fault; layoffs usually make one eligible for unemployment benefits so check with your state unemployment office right away. You might not want to leave your state in search of new work since that might screw up the UE with the state you're leaving.
hope you find what you're looking for.

First you have to find somewhere to stay. If you do not have family in the next city, find a motel and stay there. Put all your home items in storage. Or on a weekend go to that city purchase a newspaper and look for a Bachelor Apt. they are cheaper. Use that route until you get 2 paychecks then you will know how much you can spend for rent. Check the location of that job, then try to find somewhere to live close to the job. If you don't have a car you can take the bus. Keep a cell phone handy for calls to family to stay in touch. For the first week move into a motel, a safe one, have enough clothes for a week. Enough to fit in one suitcase or duffle bag. Pack light.
-Go to work, Get your feel of the city check out your surroundings.

Need more info. How much money do you have to move? What cities are we talking about? There my be transitional housing you can apply for. Do you have friends or relatives there? Can you commute until you can afford a place? How many people are in your household? Are you a veteran?

Just get up and go! That's all you can really do. There is no big planning involved. Rent a moving van, pack your stuff up, sublease or sell, and find yourself a new place. I've moved alot in my lifetime, and you just push through it.
