I have a pencil picture that has a signature in the right bottom corner with 78 circled below it. Is this a copy of an original or how do I find out? I don't think it is worth going to an art dealer. Garage sale item.

I looked up the artist name, K. Maroon but I didn't find anything.

first of all, just because it has a 78 doesn't make it a lithograph. many artists number their works. i would just take it to a dealer. you never know what you are dealing with and they may be able to save you a lot of time. but, don't just sell it to them without researching first.

Although it's probably a copy of the original, I myself have seen originals where the artist ,next to his signature will add the copyright mark (which is what the circled 78 means). When an artist wants it known that it is a limited edition you will see something like this: 6/100 usually after his signature. It means that it is signed print number six out of a limited edition of one hundred.

It is a lithograph. You have the 78th copy of it. First, it depends on how much the original is worth and then each copy is a little less than the next.

It is a print. This is the 78th copy of the print and the artist signed it. Probably not valuable at all.
