By Federal Law abortion in the US is legal, but that hasn't stopped states from adding their own exceptions to the law, or trying to restrict it.

The big fight is over Late Term abortions which the religious right are trying real hard to make illegal. The idea here is that the almost formed baby has to be cut into pieces inside the womb and then extracted. That sounds pretty gross, but it happens. The problem is that if this form of abortion is made illegal then that opens the door to make ALL forms of abortion illegal.

Another abortion debate is about the drug RU-46, the "Morning After Pill." This pill is meant to be used after a night of unprotected sex to prevent conception. The anti-abortionists tried to block the sale of the drug, but the FDA didn't agree. Now the issue is that many states require the pill can only be sold by prescription. The FDA is thinking about removing that restriction and making it available over the counter.

To me the ultimate question is in a woman's rights. If we make it illegal for her to control her own body then that's going too far for me.

Abortion is legal in the United States.

Generally speaking, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1973, Roe vs. Wade, made abortion legal in all instances within the first trimester, subject to certain restrictions in the second trimester, and only under certain conditions in the third trimester. However, the states have placed a lot of restrictions on abortions since that time, especially if one is seeking an abortion after the first trimester, if one is looking for an abortion doctor, or one is looking for the taxpayers to pay for it. Also girls under the age of 18 have difficulty in getting an abortion without their parents' consent.

Except for the case of partial birth abortion, abortions are legal in California right up the day of birth.

It is (and has been) legal for quite some time, but several people are still fighting to overturn Roe vs. Wade and make it illegal once more.
