I run cross country. is it better to slowly run faster and just try and increase it that way or should you run at a certain pace for a long time then run it faster so you chop off about 30 seconds and then run at that pace till its not as hard and continue with that?

any help is appreciated!

Blindly trying to just "run faster" is not a good way to improve. That only works if you are currently running a lot slower then you are physically capable of. If you are trying to improve what you are capable of you, you need to train. Training involves workouts designed to increase both your speed and your endurance. You need to work on both to be successful at cross country. Right now, you are basically stuck doing what your coach wants you to do for workouts. Make sure you understand why you are doing each workout so you can get the most out of it. Killing yourself on a long, slow distance run is counterproductive, just as pacing off an interval day is pointless.

good luck.

well what are your times and what is the terrain like? im a varsity runner in western pa, and we have lots of hills and we would do different work outs than someone lets say in texas. to improve your times, do intervals. intervals are where you do a hard run, and then easy, then hard, then easy. for example: you want to work on mile paces for a race, so you might want to do mile intervals. you set a time for your goal to run the mile in and use that for your interval. lets say i want to run a 5:30 mile. you would run hard going for the 5:30, then after you finish that mile, you do an easy mile to cool down, and then repeat. i usually do this 4-6 times for mile intervals...and 16-20 time for 400 meters..and like 10-12 time for 800 meters. also it depends on the distances you run. if you do 5ks(3.1 miles) or shorter or longer. i hope this helps you. also, just run harder during practice, build up the endurance and get used to going fast.

Go into the woods. Pickup a bear cub in front of its mother. Run like hell.

Your mile time will really improve.
