I had win 2000, sp2, ntfs file system. I was online and recieved a disk error, so I reset my computer right then. When it restarted it would not recognise the drive, and froze at startup with a disk error. I had another drive, which I am using now. The broken drive is slaved to it (jumpers are correct).
My need is only to retrieve family pics that are irreplaceable. Though it would be nice if I could get the whole thing back.
I have tried using Linux, Restore My Files, Norton Disk Doctor, and something else, as well as various dos commands like chkdsk /f.
NOTHING has worked at all except for Restore My Files, which returned a few pics that I didnt want and a ton of mp3's ive never seen before.
ANYONE with ANY advice at all?

Try to use WinHex, with this program you can easily recover all your thing like pics, apps, mp3 , etc and you can reformat your hardrive or zeroing it

If the files are that irreplaceable, the best solution is to send in to data recovery specialists. Try a service like drivesavers.com. Even if your drive is dead, they can potentially recover parts of the hard drive which might have your photos on them. Because you have Windows still running, if it is running off the hard drive, there is a very good chance the data can be recovered, but you need to STOP messing with it and send the hard drive in.

hmm, i was going to suggest using "recover my files". i dont know if thats what you meant when you said "restore my files". i use recover my files when i work on customers computers after they crash. i'm usually able to recover pics and music. you could attempt to go to the dos prompt... (for example i will name the slave drive D: ) type in d: (or watever drive letter is the slave drive) then when you get the d:_ prompt type in... sfc /scannow ... that is a system file checker. it might help. thats all i can think of right off hand. good luck!

erd commander\ winternals.

If you can get a copy of this disk, and it sees\recognizes the drive,it will let you retrieve the lost data that you seek. A few other helpful tools are included......
