I believe that selfishness usually implies doing something good for yourself at other people's expense. I believe that working hard for yourself is great as long as you are helping other people in the process.

look at it like this: selfish = sell fish (lol)
let's say ur hobby is fishing..and u just caught a very very big fish after spending half the day in the open sea fishing..it's wayy too big that u know u'll make a lot of money if u sell it..and u'r thinking what to do with the fish..on one hand u can just sell the fish for personal gain ie for sum money..while on the other hand u know u'll feel a lot better if u just donate the fish to the homeless and to those in need or just share it with ur family and friends..then after much much thinking u decided to sell the fish-the whole lot cuz u decided making money is wayy more important than doing charity even for a tiny bit of it..i sayy why can't u do both?? u make some and u give some?? u know it's better that wayy but then again greed has more control over ur life..that's what being selfish is all about.. peace=)

you are right! people often mistake good character traits as something "selfish". Sometimes, being selfish becomes a virtue if your "selfishness" helps you grow as a person who is true to one's self. If you're really interested in the idea of selfishness as a virtue, I suggest you read "The Foutnainhead" by Ayn Rand. It will change your perspective on what being selfish is.

yeah, I don't really think working hard for yourself is selfish, agreed with the person above, it's ambitious. Depends on the situation of course, there are certain ways that I would change that view, but in general i'd say that's, again, ambitious not selfish.

Conductors back to the audience. In real life, this could be interpreted as being selfish but because of its purpose and achievement, it's blessed by wisdom. However, if someone has no valuable purpose or no drive to achieve any goals, but demands from others or rocks their boats, is selfish.

Selfish means being determined to achieve your own goals or desires to the exclusion of other people and their own goals and desires. It can be construed as not caring about other people, or it can be argued that a person is so completely focused upon their own needs that they set in motion all actions that they can to guarantee their success to the exclusion of other people. However, fate and other outside elements play a role in whose goals are achieved. If a person makes good choices, I believe that they enhance their own chances for success. At the same time, a person who makes decisions based upon spur of the moment analysis is more likely to make mistakes or use poor judgment to their own detriment.

Working hard for yourself is commendable. But when you neglect the interests of others while pursuing your own, that will then be considered selfishness.
