A chess set!!! They have the good and bad side. Each piece is replicated really well. Try some of the gaming stores that carry more than regular monoply.

I could be considered a big fan of Mr. Tolkien's books as well. Volumes far before and beyond the six books yes, six of LOTR.
My kids, my step-kids and my wife independently got me LOTR trivial pursuit twice;(I play one and store the other) and a very nice bound version of The Lord of the Rings "trilogy" set for Christmas not long ago. I couldn't have been happier with my family's attention to my preferences and hobbies regarding a gift. Unfortunately I have found no rival for the trivial pusuit game so it has become mundane and I rarely play it. I still treasure the gift.

If a trip to New Zealands film locations is too pricy, check out the replicas that Sideshow offers. They look awesome and some of them are already sold out. So if you can hunt those ites down, let's say on ebay, you'd have a great gift. If you get the entire line, you can biuld a miniature replica of middle earth...if you have a spare room :)

Go to Museum Replicas and look through the catalog for the LOTR things. They have several of the swords replicated as well as some of the costumes and jewelry pieces.

How about an original printing of the LOTR book? And if you can get that, maybe one that has been autographed by Tolkien himself. I think any LOTR fan would be jealous of that.

If you have a LOT of bucks to spend, you could visit theonering.net and research buying him some actual prop, partial costume, or something actually used in the filming of the movie.
If he liked the movies so well, another nice gesture would be for you to sit down and watch them so at least you'd know what they were.

If you have the movies, which I am sure you do. Check on the inside of the movie case for a broucher. In it has many cool replicas and what not. I am sure he would love owning some of that stuff!
