Subaru.
I've had my 99 Legacy 2.5GT for 3 years and the only problem I've had was the head gaskets. At 150k+ miles, it's still going strong. If you go 05+, they're tweaked a little for the better too, they're tigher and have a few more bells and whistles.
There is a Forester XT w/ 250chp, so it'd be practical AND fun...
Not that the Camry is bad, just boring to me. Actually I think they have a 6 spd V6 now, which would be fun, but I love the AWD, rain or shine.
Volvo, eh ($). Audi, ugh. Volkswagen. uuuggghhh.
Stick with either the Subie or the Yota.

The Camry would give you better quality but the utility you seem to desire is a matter of form and function. Therefore, go with the Subaru. It has been steadily getting better and better reviews for years. It is likely that some of the Subaru's features will eventually become standard on all cars. Many cars in the past which are no longer made were ahead of their time (Alas the Tucker) and the fact that your only considering these two should make the choice easy. Some comparison sites online are in my source list below. Good Luck whatever you choose!

If you live in an area where the weather gets bad often, the Subaru (spell it backwards and see how it reads... LOL) would be your best choice. However, keep in mind a lot of mechanics don't like to work on Subaru's (other that the Subaru dealership) because of their not-too-common engine design.
Get an Audi wagon or a Volvo if you can afford it. If not, check out Volkswagen for a wagon as well. Well build and safe and pretty reliable if you keep up the maintenance on them.

You couldn't go wrong with either. Choose the Camry for a trouble-free ownership experience and the Subaru for a sporting drive.
If it makes you feel any better Toyota has a 35% stake in Hino Motors which owns Subaru. So if you think about it, Toyota kinda is Subaru or perhaps the other way around.

Also drive an Outback. I went to the dealer fully expecting to buy a Forester and liked the Outback a lot better. I had a Honda Accord for 7 years and the Outback is MUCH more like the Accord than the Forester, which has a short wheelbase and a choppy ride. The cargo capacity is only 1 sq ft smaller.
If you don't like the added height of the Outback, drive a Legacy wagon.

Own a Subaru wagon and love it. They never say "die." They will keep on going far longer than you want or need them to.
I have 160,000+ miles on it and only needed regular, ordinary maintence.
