Picked up five Knock Out rose plants for a $1.00 each from the discard rack at Lowes. They are alive but scraggy and ugly. Can you give me some advice on how to restore them. I considered pruning them all the way back but don't quite know what would be best. I live in Zone 9, South Florida. Thanks to all.

You don't say whether they are potted or you put them in the ground. Best if you cut off anything that looks dead or yucky even if it is far down. If you haven't put them in the ground, I'd pot them up in 5 gallon cans with really good potting soil. Keep them in full sun and water every other day in 90º or hotter weather. Then maybe when they get some more growth you can plant them in the ground.

Good luck.

You should try to get them to bounce a little while still potted. Put them in a bright area, but out of direct sunlight. Then water them until water drains out the bottom. There is probably fert. already in the pot so do not fert. Just water.

If you notice any pests or if you see distresses leaves (that look like more than scorch or wilt) spray them with Neem Oil. It is easy on the plants but an excellent insecticide for rose pests and also has fungicidal qualities. You can find it at a Lawn and Garden center. Bonide markets it under the name 3in1 Rx and it has a rose pictured on it. Other manufacturers make it as well.

After 7-10 days they should look a little perkier. Then for about 4-5 days put the pots in the sun where you are going to plant them but keep them in the pots. This will prepare them for full sun exposure. Keep them watered--but not overwatered.

Finally plant them. Make the holes twice the diameter of the pots and as deep. Don't fertilize. Once they are in the ground and you see new growth you should be in good shape. Spray for pests if necessary with the neem oil. Once you see new 5 leaflet leaves you can start fertilizing. I would recommend something gentle like miracle grow mixed at half strength. After a month you can use your regular rose fertilizer.

I've got some Knock-outs. Love 'em.

...its called knock out for a reason... you lean down to smell the rose... and it grows so dang fast it hits u in the face and knocks you out... u live in south florida ... so all u have to do is plant it ...and water it... i wouldn't fertilize it too much now...maybe a little diluted water soluble just to get it on its feet...

first set them on your driveway and burn them.
next get a g.e.d. and get a better job so you dont have to buy FLOWERS off of the discount rack at lowes.
