The sum of two numbers is 31. Their difference is 7. What are the two numbers?

2x=31-7

All you have to do is divide 31 by two to get what's right in the middle. In this case it is 15.5. Then, take 7 and divide that by two-you get 3.5. Take the 15.5 and add 3.5--you get 19. Take the other 15.5 and subtract 3.5 to get 12. 19+12=31 with a difference in 7. Voala!
