I have charter cable internet 5 mbps and nearly everything i download hardly ever goes above 50kbps. My download typically starts at about 120 kbs and then goes down for a long time. What the hell?

I would suspect a virus or spyware. Check your anti-virus, get updates, then run a full scan.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster.

5 Mbps is the maximum rate you will get. Actually, they screw up and occasionally you could get more. But there is no guarantee what the minimum rate is. So, depending on how your neighborhood is wired up, you may be sharing bandwidth in such a fashion you don't get a good rate at all. Also, the 120kbpc could be the result of a lower bandwidth on the server you are hitting. If you visit a website on a low-end server or network, you are limited by them.

talk to ur ISP, and check if ur internet settings r correct.... like if ur firewall its opening ports and stuff.... also delete all ur temp files, it works for me sometimes.... cuz the temp files r taking up space, and supposedly thats to make ur pages load faster if u reload, but since sometimes there a lot of temp files taking up space, ur computer takes longer to search for those temporal files, therefore making ur internet seem slower
