more effeciently.

But I agree with your teacher. I'm also a math teacher, and calculators get kids in trouble faster than you can say y=x.

The problem is, they only CALCULATE. They do not help you understand a problem. A calculator is of no use if you don't know how to do a problem.

The only time a calculator is justified is for silly calculations, like 65.087 times 34.111

I don't let my students use calculators until they know the basics.

In Alg2, we do use the graphers for matrices and graphing systems of equations, but not until the students have a solid feel for what it means for a graph to cross the x-axis, or intersect with another curve.

And they certainly won't help you get a better grade!

If a student has the choice to use a calculator, that student would most likely finish his or her homework in a more timely manor. The accuracy of the work would be greater and the student's grade on the work would be higher.

Now get to bed.

If a student has shown a proven proficiency in math, he/she should be given the opportunity to use a calculator. This would increase the chances of earning a higher grade for a well-deserving student.
