I belong to an Order that is a bit more esoteric and perhaps less known that the ordinary Freemasons, American Co-Masonry. We admit women and men, and are derived from the Grand Loge Symbolique from France. Thus our Rites are a tad more historical and perhaps even more toward the dramatic than what one would find in masculine Rite Freemasonry.

With that in mind, I will say that I met with a number of the members of the Lodge before my Initiation. That truly helped me overcome any doubts I had about joining, about their or my sanity. *grin* I was never played with, as in a fraternity prank, nor was I made sport of. The people in my Order are fine and upstanding folks. I know them now all the way up to the Most Sovereign Grand Commander (the Grand Poohbah, *grin*). Ain't a Satanist or an atheist in the lot. I am sure that whatever Order you do join, you will find that they are nice folks there, too.

I have always felt treasured as a "building stone" in the Temple of Solomon. I have learned to subdue (control) my passions (emotions). OK, I am still learning that lesson. Have I been afraid? Only afraid that I was not up to the standards I thought I should be as a Mason. But scared? No.

If you have faith in God, why would you need to be afraid of anything?

You will be in situations that scare you but we have had many generations of Masons without it becoming a leading cause of death so you are probably safe. The whole initiation is designed to be a rebirth. The things you thought you knew will pass away and you will know many new things. I think this is worth a little discomfort.

Free Masons have nothing to do with the Mormans other than a few overlapping members. Free masons are not "after your soul", you can be a Mason and still be any religion or non-religion that you choose.

Don't worry, there is nothing in Freemasonry that will conflict with any of the obligations you have to God, your country, or your family. It is a fraternal organization dedicated to making good men better. There is nothing to be afraid of during any of the rituals. You will not be harmed or embarrassed in any way. Freemasons are not children or men wanting to act like children. It is a serious organization that fosters much good in the world.

Masonry is NOT a religion and anyone who says otherwise is a complete liar. In fact, the discussion of religion and politics is expressly forbidden in Lodge meetings.

I don't think so, but the Masons are kind of kissin' cousins to the Mormons, and that alone would scare me off. Read a good Joseph Smith history; not one put out by the LDS Church. Smith was quite interested in Masonic rite and ritual. Secret temple ceremonies were inspired by the Masons, rather than by divine decree.I believe that the "blood oath" to uphold their faith has been done away with, however.
