Washington, DC is the capital city of the United States of America, and the formal seat and administrative center of the national government.

DC stands for the District of Columbia, which is a special administrative district set up to provide the functions of local government for the city of Washington. The District of Columbia provides police, water and sewer, animal control, road construction, and all the similar administrative functions of a city government.

DC has no capital, though there is a government center where the officials in charge of the city administration have their offices.

If you don't get all this, don't worry. They will go over it all for you again next year in the Fourth Grade.

Actually, Washington D.C. doesnt have a capital. It is a city. States like New York, and California have capitals. Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States, but it is not a city.

Washington DC is the capital of the USA, it's not a state, therefore it does not have a capital. It's pretty much like a big city.

Washington is the capital of the District of Columbia. Nowadays, Washington is the only city in the district, but in years past, Georgetown was a separate town inside D.C.

As a teacher I don't know whether to be appalled or sad.

Washington DC IS THE capital, it doesn't have a capital.

There have been people who have tried to make Washington, D.C. into its own state, the 51st of the Union. If that were to happen, it would need a capital. I imagine it would work like the country of Vatican City (home of the pope), whose capital is also Vatican City.
