are you asking what the purpose of a capital is? or the purpose of the capital of the US being Washington D.C?

Washington, D.C. was chosen as the capital because it was not in any state so no state could brag about being better than another because of the capital. The first two capitals were New York City and Philadelphia in that order. As a matter of fact, George Washington never even lived in the White House.

I'm not sure what you mean by "purpose".
The capital of the USA is Washington DC,,,,,has been for many many presidents.
It used to be in New York & Philadelphia if I remember my history correctly.
