So if you burn a ribbon of magnesium and determine the mass and then keep the ash after its burned and measure the mas of the ash whats the chemical equation?? is it...

magnesium + oxygen--------> ash

Mg(s)+O2(g)-->MgO(s)

MgO is magnesium oxide.

You would think that the Mg just combined with the Oxygen in the air wouldn't you! Probably because of the word 'burn', however, although it does combine with the 'O', it also combines with the Nitrogen in the air forming Mg3N2.

This can be carried on step further and a little water put on the 'ash', might just get a little ammonia smell.

burning is a combustion reaction. a combustion reaction yields co2 + h20.
