The fact that they are so easy to turn on lends to masculine. The fact they are so easy to turn off leads to feminine.
This is a conundrum wrapped in an enigma shrouded in a mystery.

It would have been interesting to see what gender we would be referring to computers with if English had never lost its grammatical gender centuries ago. My guess is that the tradition of calling ships "she" is a remnant of that feature.
As for whether to refer to computers as male or female, I suppose it depends on the model. Many computers that "speak" via the manipulation of voice recording samples are programmed with female voices. This has been the tradition with voice-activated computers in science-fiction shows (with the exception of one male-voiced computer on Babylon 5).

No, they're just infuriating hunks of human creation. They don't really have a personality. Except the Hal 9000, and he was a boy.
And for your information, the Germans always referred to airships (Zeppelins) in the male gender.
(And god bless the Amiga and Jay Miner while I'm at it---)

I like to think mine is just a machine, but the network knows him as Hal. He has more power than the others, and he gets a real kick out of messin' with Sigourney Weaver's head.

It depends. If it's running slow and programs are not responding, it's male, as in, You rotten dirty GD SOB. If, on the other hand, it's moving fast and my web searches are producing just what I want, it's female, as in, You sweet beautiful bit@h.

All Captains love their ships and we all hate our comps so I would assume they are male. They have the answers we just can't find them in all that unused space.

My computer is the com before the storm. Storms are dominantly she or her most of the time, so the com must be a she.

Mine has a hard drive. He's definitely male. But he has issues. All he ever shows me is his software.
