It depends on what looks good with your coloring (hair, eyes, skin). Then it would also depend on what styles and lengths look best on you. Dresses that are long, ornate, and/or full skirted, tend to look better with more subdued colors. Simpler styles and shorter dresses are easier to use the bolder colors without looking too vivid or overdone.

Popular colors include red, black, white, pink. Maybe try to find a dress that's isn't one of those colors. Something unique so you don't look like every other girl there. If you want a red dress, maybe try a different shade, like burgundy. If you want black, maybe try one with trim or accents in a different color.
Then find shoes to complement the dress color. They can either be the color of the dress, or a neutral (black, white, silver, gold) with trim in the color. If the dress has an accent color, try to bring it out more with your shoes. A black dress with a pink ribbon would have pink shoes, a blue dress with black underskirt would have black shoes, a red dress with a sheer black overlay would have black shoes, etc...

Homecoming is usually a little less formal than a prom, and you can go with a more fun and flirty look. Save the long, sophisticated, and elegant dress for prom.
