Actually what you are having is the cathode ray tube hence the term "CRT" the tube is filled with phosphor which is excited with a specifiic light to shine at the screen. What you are having is the phosphor is dying turning on its side all its doing is scraping the powder so you may see it better . So its time to replace it with an lcd screen. If not get a flatscreen crt monitor.

Also if it continues a cable inside your monitor that shorts out.

So i guess to be on the safe side check your video card for problems and replace your monitor

The monitor is on it's way out. Sounds like a problem I had with a TV set which would also go blank occasionally but I could still hear the audio. The problem was on the line output transformer on the main board which had a dry solder joint. A hairline crack in the joint could be what did it. I resoldered these joints and it was problem free for another two years until we replaced it with a LCD screen.

sounds like the monitor is going bad, short in the wire. Make sure it is pluged in securly. Next time try giving it a little hit on the top. I used to have to do this. hell i used to hit the top of mine with a baseball bat LOLOL and it would work for a few hours, then would have to pull out the louisville slugger again LOL Who says violence and technology don't mix hehehehe
