Two best records in each conference amongst non-division winners. If there is a tie, there is a tiebreaking procedure set up, based on head-to-head record, record in common games, record in conference, etc.

The wildcard team is the best two second place team in the league. This is set up by AFC and NFC there are two wildcards choosen in each division.
