i'm thinkin about getting a different fan/htsink for an amd athlon 64. should i get a tab of thermal paste or does the processor come with some?

btw: b.i.y. means build it yourself.

Newer Pentium 4 chips and fans come with the paste already applied to the heatsink.

While I don't know about the Athlon 64, let's assume that they would SAY it if it does. If you are buying at NewEgg, then check this out:

I don't think the processor doe's. If the heat sink/fan doesn't, you should definitely use it. The paste insures that you have the best thermal connection between your heat sink and EXPENSIVE processor. There is an old adage," Spend a little money now or a lot later". Good luck on the computer

If you buy a hetasink/fan combination, often they come with thermal paste . It's usually not as good as Arctic Silver, but it generally works.

usually the processor will come with a little pack of it, but i would check with the manufactor just to make sure.
