Ok. I've recently burned all 2000 of my songs from iTunes onto disks to save computer space.
Which means I deleted them from the computer.

I know I'll buy new music to add on eventually. How do I update my iPod without having it erase everything from it and just add the new songs to it? Is that even possible?

Go to preferences in Itunes, select iPod and choose manually update songs and playlists.

Of couse, it may be too late. It may update automatically the first time you plug it into the computer.

But after that, you should be good to go.

By the way, USB hard drives are not that expensive. Check ebay or something for a good sized one.
