You can hear a heartbeat as early as 8 weeks. I did with all my kids I have three. Usually that early look for the heart beat very lower in your tummy cause the baby is so little. Congrats!!!

It's not a stupid question. Right now the baby is so tiny and so deep inside that you wouldn't be able to hear the heartbeat by using a stethoscope, but later on you may be able to. I've heard that you can feel your babies heartbeat later on, but quite a bit later on. When you visit your doctor they will use a special instrument that will hear your babies heartbeat. Once you can hear the babies heartbeat, the chances of a miscarriage are greatly reduced :)

I remember my wife being pregnant and the Nurse having a hard time finding the heartbeat of my son. You are a Not trained in the medical field and are Just coming out of your First Trimester!
DON'T PANIC!
On your next OBGYN appointment, talk to the nurse. Tell her What you are trying to do and she will Explain how and where to place the stethoscope and WHEN you might begin to hear the heartbeat. Keep in my, when they check you and your baby at the OBGYN, they Don't use a stethoscope! they use an electronic scanner to pick up the heartbeat!
Good luck and Congrats!!!

I can't honestly remember when the inner organs develop - i know it's during the last trimester - late in the last trimester before they are FULLY developed. I don't think a simple stethoscope would work as your own heart beat would resinate over the babies and some believe you and your baby beat as one drum. I know during check ups the Dr's never even tried to hear the baby's beat with a simple stethoscope - they always had to pull out that high tech "stress test" machine. Believe me for my third child they needed not want - they HAD to find and record his heart beat and i was strapped down to the "stress test" for 48 hours! I just don't think you can properly assess - hear - the babies distinct heart beat. But on the other hand - I know my husband would talk to my belly for at least half an hour every night - and poke and prode - to the point that everytime my husband walked in the door and spoke - i felt as if the baby were doing backflips! it wouldn't hurt to try listening - say once a week until you hear something - just don't get disppointed if you don't hear anything. One will never know unless they try. It's worth a shot - Give it a try! Good Luck!!!

Not until week 20..
http://www.drkoop.com/ency/93/002398_2.html
(go down to 20 weeks)
What doctors use is not a stethoscope to hear the heart beat, it is a Doppler. Which yes, you can hear as early as 12 weeks with a doppler. I tried to hear my babys heart beat at 12 weeks using a stetoscope and I heard NOTHING. The BeBe Sounds Monitor will not work either (you get them from Walmart or places like that) so dont waste your money. If you *want* to try, go for it... but dont be freaked out when you dont hear a heart beat... it just means the heart beat isn't strong enough to be heard by stethoscope yet, but I can assure you that your baby is fine.

I don't think you will have much luck. I have had EMT training (which includes stethoscopes) and I can't do it. You can rent a doppler (baby heart monitor with a speaker) for fairly cheap, or you can buy one for about 40 dollars.
You could always wait until your next appointment and ask your doctor to let you hear it :P.
Congratulations, enjoy your baby.
Btw the baby's heartbeat will not be loud, if you hear something loud, you have found your own pulse, don't worry we all do it.
It should be very quick more than 100 beats per minute.

Im not sure if that works, but you can find fetal heart listening devices @ the stores online and @ home nowadays. They arent extremely expensive, nad some actually come with the optional recording equipment. They are easy to use, compact, and can be used for the next pregnancy. It is also a great toy to bring to bring to parties with your pregnant girlfriends. Thay are a great investment, and when you are done havin babies, you can give it away or sell it. You can try www.heartbeatsathome.com for a good device to purchase or rent or www.babybeat.com for a recordable device. Good luck!
