I think it still is popular in certain circles. Chess became popular among Americans when the champion Bobby Fischer bested the Soviets' champions.
However, with the passing of the Cold War, and America's decline in industrial and intellectual productivity, chess has fallen to the wayside. The rise in electronic games has also taken away from chess and other board games.

It's still popular not to the degree it was in the past though.
I hate playing on line it's not as social as face to face chess that's
why I prefer playing at the park for $2 a game it's more fun Internet Chess is just a big wasp nest of cheaters they use commercial and open source computer chess programs to play their moves they aren't very polite or good sportsman either if you are winning a game they will stop moving and let their clocks run out or they'll swear black and blue trash talk to you worse than Tony Montana in the movie Scarface some of them make eminem look like a choir boy with their bad language.

Many people still enjoy a good game of chess, it is just much easier (and flashier) to play computer games. I'm not saying that computer games require less intellect - some are very challenging - only that we are more accustomed to looking at a screen and tapping on a control pad than fiddling around with all those funny little tokens.
I still play board games like chess, risk, and axis and allies - I'm rather fond of all those little tokens. Also, as a Latin teacher I have my kids at school play board games two days a year (the day before Christmas break and the day before summer break). They usually protest at first, by by the end of the block, they do not want to stop. ;-)
(my rational? It teaches them to think logically!)

Electronic games, which may be just as hard, have taken it's place. Just a sign of the times.
