You said you send thank you cards after a "service is given"? Depends on the type of "service" you provide but would it serve your purpose to "include" something along with that thank you card such as "a referral certificate" for that customer if they send you a new customer?
Something like this:
Thank you for your business. We appreciate you allowing us to provide you with our services. "Company name" would like to offer your family and friends our same professional assistance and quality service. By simply referring our company to others that results in future transactions we have included a $10 gift certificate in YOUR name (whatever amount suits your company budget) to pass on.
You can use this toward your own (account, purchase, next service, whatever applies to your company) Simply give the coupon to a prospective client. They bring the coupon to us.
YOU get paid for your referral!
Satisfaction is our goal..............
The new client will come in but often forgets the coupon but you still get the sale! If they do happen to name drop the customer that referred them then of course you are obligated to redeem the coupon.
Coupons are a major marketing tool so use them to your advantage. They can be done on your computer to save printing costs.
Also try "customer appreciation" days. Include in your thank you notes that on such and such day their will be some event like "bring a friend" and if they use our service we will promptly THANK YOU by (choose some mythod)
Thus bringing in the current client and a potential client.
If I knew what your business was I may could think of more.
Maybe do an add-on to your question that gives a little more detail and perhaps someone else can give you a better answer.
I wish you all the best...............

Here's one for you:
Go to Starbucks or some other coffee shop and buy the $5.00 gift cards... then go to the craft store and buy some card stock and then with your computer create a card that reads
"Thanks a latte" on the front and write your personal message inside.
Many people in the business world love coffee and everyone loves a bad pun!!! Ha! Ha!

How about a nicely printed discount coupon. Very elegant, darn green with gold lettering (can be done on computer) but offer a nice little discount and make them feel special.

This may depend on your business. I had a landscaping business years ago. Would get Amaryllis's cheap or once got these nice Cedar Welcome signs to put in their yards. I always gave my customers things like this. Just keep an eye out for closeouts and such, then buy all you can. Store them back until you need them.

You could give them 10% or so discounts for a future use with you? Or a bonus of some sort? Something you wouldn't have to probably eat into your costs right away, but enough to let them know you are thankful....

How about a discount to those who refer you?
What about a gift card to Walmart or Starbucks?
How about a handwritten note card showing sincerity???

C'mon ts, I feel your need but you gotta give us an idea what this is about. It makes a difference if it resulted in a house sale than if it's a good fishing lodge.
