Sorry but the name of the college can mean a lot. Clearly the most important thing is the education that you get - The amount of time you put into it. However, some companies only hire people from certain colleges. The better ranked colleges i.e usually ivy league schools are usually better. So depending on what you want to do with your life after school. Get a job, go to gradualte school, medical school etc, has an impact on where you want to go. I went to a big time college and was able to get a job easily because so many companies recruited there. I have a Biomed Eng degree and a MBA. But in the end you have to like what you are doing and the feel of the school as well.

Well, before we got mechanically inclined, it really stood for Agricultural and Mining, but there aren't many mining oriented schools anymore so mechanical has taken its place. Think about it, we've been mining a lot longer than we've been building things like steam engines and automobiles.
