I was always told that the ring signifies a closed circle of love between two people that no one can break apart and it is placed on the left hand because that is closest to the heart.

It's because the rings were sized for the fingers that they were intended to be worn on. In ancient Greece and Rome, it was believed that there was a vein that ran directly to the heart from the left hand ring finger and the wedding band acts as a spiritual shield from anyone stealing the betrothed hearts affection. In other cultures, such as medieval Europe and even very religious Jews today would place the marriage band on the index finger of the right hand so it would be more conspicuous, sort of like a status symbol. But at that time, the marriage band was more like a signet ring with the family crest on it. That is why most men will wear a signet ring on the middle finger of the right hand, even if they really didn't know why. As to why in the western culture we still use the left hand fourth finger as a wedding finger, tradition.

The reason it's a ring (as opposed to other types of jewelry) is because a ring is a circle which represents a perfect connection with total completion, no point of entry and no point of exit, perfectly balanced with no top and no bottom, all at once a beginning and an end. Marriage is supposed to be all of those things.

The reason it's worn on the finger it is is because the ring finger on the left hand has a vein that runs straight to your heart.

It's all based on long traditions...

I heard that back in the day, men used to steal women from their familys, and they would lock them up and beat them when they tried to leave. so when they finally calmed down, they were allowed out of the cave, but the man would tie a peice of thin rope around that finger so that she would not forget what would happen if she tried to run away.

But I thing the vein thing is true. I heard that somewere too.

It's the universal finger.. and it's also to let everyone know that you are taken and shouldn't be messed with.. Like an adultry deturent.... That's why you'll notice the first thing someone does when they want to stray from their spouse is take their finger off..... see... ah!

Honestly I don't think either of your choices are correct.

I have always known it to be the vein that leads to your heart. But really what does it matter as long as you love & respect each other.
