I think in the early stages most really believe they can make a difference. Once they get into office, the games begin. Few of them stay true to their words and continue to vote for what they really think is best, not what is popular at the moment, but most are prisoners of the polls.

Okay, I'll be honest. I was a little different when I was a kid and all I wanted was to be a politician when I grew up. To some extent, I'd still like to be only because I'd like to represent and help my fellow citizens.

The problem is, though, that the vast majority of politicians become corrupt once they get in office because they have sooooo much power and they often forget their roots...the reasons as to why they got into the political game in the first place. They stop worrying about individuals and families and are more concerned with lobbyists and getting more money in their own coffers so they can get re-elected and keep that all-powerful job.

Of course, I'd like to say that wouldn't happen to me, but the truth is...no one knows for sure they won't be seduced by that power.

A good politician tells the truth.

A good politician can explain himself in a way that everyone understands and respects.

A good politician always works for the people, and not a paycheck or special interests.

most are under the belief that they can really make a difference--a noble cause. once they see how the political world is really run, they find out either you play the game or you get played.

Think about it. Would a sane person want to be in congress - much less the president?

No matter what is said about them - they have POWER!

That is enough for some people. There are the minority that get into politics to actually try to HELP their fellow man...but they are few and far between in my opinion.
