First of all, Congratulations.

Take your stone to a reputable jeweler and tell him you want it appraised in front of you. Under no circumstances should you leave the stone because it may be switched with one of inferior quality. Keep calling jewelers until you will find one who will perform the appraisal in front of you. Ask how much it will cost and tell him/her you want a written appraisal for insurance purposes. You may want to bring the entire ring with you for evaluation purposes.

Jewelers hear from customers wanting appraisals all the time. This ring will last you longer than the jeweler will be in business. Forget what he says.

Tell your jeweler you want an independent appraisal. Any reputable one will do it for you, though it may cost extra. However, you must trust your jeweler - no proper jeweler will appraise a stone in front of you - it's not a two minute procedure, after all! Unless your jeweler has a complete gem lab in their store (and some do, don't get me wrong), the stone will have to be sent to a lab to have a complete appraisal done. These things take time - even if they do have a lab, expect several hours of work to go into it. Are you really going to stand there for 8 hours, doing nothing, instead of getting on with your day? C'mon! If you don't feel you can trust your jeweler, then please go buy your diamond somewhere else. After all, why would you give several thousand dollars of your hard earned money to someone you don't think deserves it?
