Roberta went to spend her tickets at the local arcade the other day, she wanted to start a collection of small plastic animals. The plastic animals cost 28 tickets each.

However, she got it in her head that, for good luck, the total amount of tickets she must spend must be a number where all of the digits are the same.

With that in mind, what is the minimum number of ANIMALS she must buy?

*hint* Find out how many tickets she must spend, then divide it by 28. The amount of tickets will be high. *hint*

I will be suprised to see how many people can figure this out.

Hmm, you're right, this isn't easy. Let me see...

Since you're dividing by 28, the last digit must be even, which means all the digits have to be even. The result must also have a factor that is a number with all ones. Checking all such numbers, I get 444444 as the smallest possibility, which means she has to buy 15873 animals. That's a lot of toy animals!

For questions like this, Microsoft excel rules!

Starting in the far left column, going down type the numbers that have repeating digits.
green_meklar is correct that the number must be even, so only do even numbers. in the next column, type in =a1/28
Copy and paste this all the way down. The answers of what happens if you divide by 28 show up. Look for the first one that does not have decimals. As someone else said, it is 444,444, which yields 15873 animals.

I have found three solutions which work. The smallest number of animals she must buy is 15873 animals for a total of 444,444 tickets. She could also buy 31746 animals at 28 tickets each for 888,888 tickets. And if she were the Bill Gates of carnivals, she could buy 3,174,631,746 animals for 888,888,888,888 tickets. But how many animals does one person need?

The answer is 444444 tkts and 15873 animals.

Got it by mentally dividing 111.... by 7 to see at what earliest stage the remainder becomes zero. That gave the no. of animals to be bought. 28 being 4 times 7, just replaced the 1's by 4's to get money spent. The process took a minute to do mentally.

Well, wasn't very tough.

I'm too tired for this right now.

If she took the $20 to KMart or Target instead of playing ski ball, and making wierd theories about what number of tickets to get, she could buy WAY more plastic animals I think.

She will have to buy 15873 animals (which costs 444444 tickets).

She should probably use those tickets to pay for a psychiatrist though.
