Most of the time, they don't get paid. If you did not pay when you were supposed too, the other party would need to go through the process of getting your wages garnished, if they really wanted to make an issue out of it. Most people don't usually take it that far...it is to stressful to keep going back to court.

As others have said, on court TV shows, the producers pay the winner out of a set fund of about $1000-$3000. After the winner is paid, the remaining money is split among the two parties.
In real life, if the loser doesn't pay, the winner can get the amount entered as a judgement against the person's credit. This judgement can stay on the record for decades, and can be renewed. This will affect the person as they try to apply for loans. The winner can also try to get the wages of the loser garnished.

Most tv court shows say at the end or begining of the show that they will pay the outcome of the case up to a certain amount and the judge will usually find for the people under that limit.

When Law suites occur , usually the one who wins, has to wait for their money It can take up to many years to be paid for winning. Sometimes, never. In some cases you can gauranish their wages, but that cost money to do that. Then your lawyer can put a sale on their property , sell their stuff to pay you. If they don't have a job, nor own any property to sell, then you will never get paid. So when you sue a poor, homeless, un-employed person. Don't excpect to get your money.
