Cold sores are a type of herpes. It is usually a different type then the type people get from sex.

I have had them since I was a kid. My grandmother had them and I used to hate to kiss her goodbye...all us kids still get them in the same place...from having to kiss grandma...totally gross.

Whenever I am really, really stressed or have a cold I know I can get them. I NEVER drink out of anyone's glass and no one is allowed to share my drink. I do not kiss my daughter goodnight...she "pecks" me on the cheek. Whether I have an outbreak or not...they are still contagious. The only thing that has ever really worked for me is Campho-Phenique and that just drys it out...I tried Abreeva and it doesn't do anything for me...different things work for different people. The person that finds a cure for herpes type I or type II will be very rich...having it sucks!!!

Hi there, two things
1. It's Herpes Simplex (probably type 1) DO NOT HAVE ORAL SEX-IT TRANSFERS!!!
2. now, having said that. there is a cure/prevention. take Lysine (this is an amino acid available at health food stores/ walmart/etc.) it's a tablet/capsule 500mg. each I would recommend around 2000mg when you have a flare-up. it will usually help fever blisters/cold sores to go away within about 4 days. you can take 500/1000mg daily for prevention. it will either substantially reduce the occurrence of the above or prevent them completely. this is for life. We don't really know why for sure why Lysine works, it simply does. I would guess it's coupled with the fact that Lysine is an acid and bad stuff requires a base PH to reproduce this includes viral/bacterial. for example: if you have a sore that is full of puss you can make a poultice (this is a bandage/gauze/rag/anything) and put used coffee grounds on the infected wound and cover with the gauze/bandage etc. and the infection will go away. the coffee grounds are positive PH and the infection can not reproduce and therefore will start healing. pretty cool huh.

Been there done that. There are creams like Anbesol available at pharmacies that stop the pain but don't really help to cure it. The best thing to do is dab tincture of camphor or rubbing alcohol on the sore once in a while to keep it dry. Wash your hands a lot, keep your hands away from your face so you won't spread it, and no kissing anyone until it's completely healed.

You needed to start putting ABREEVA on it as soon as it started to tingle and itch. That would have shortened the time. You could still try it.
Be sure you do not mess with the scab. I was impatient and took the scab off and it bled and now I have a red place on my lip that will not go away............is slowly fading. It has been about a month.
I had not had one in many years, but was under a lot of stress which brought it out.
Lessen stress if you can and check the pharmacy or health supplement store about getting some lysine supplements which decrease their occurrence in a lot of people.

I hate them. I just got rid of one. With this medicine that comes in a blue lil container.....LIP MEDEX....by Blistex! Keep putting this on it, and wash your hands all the time. Those things spread. Dont be surprised if it comes back. It might. Unless your one of those lucky ones, they get a cold sore and it never comes back!
