Is your child a boy? If so, I just want you to be aware of a relatively uncommon condition called Pyloric Stenosis which seems to occur almost exclusively in boys. Most pediatricians have never seen a case because it is so uncommon but if your child continues to do this after you have followed all the other suggestions and doesn't seem to gain weight as quickly as he should,it wouldn't hurt to ask about it. This is a condition where a walnut shaped growth ( Not cancer ) occurs in the little opening between the bottom of the stomach and the beginning of the small intestine and it becomes increasingly difficult for food to pass through so it is expelled, usually quite forcefully.

Ours did the same thing....... the doctor wasn't concerned at all because he was healthy and still gaining weight. He said "you've got a spitter" like it was nothing. Then he explained that in some babies the epiglottis doesn't fully develop until later. That's the little stopper flap thing that keeps the contents in the stomach instead of washing right back up the esophagus. Our little man is almost 4 years old now, and every once in a while he still spits up a little, like if he's really full of milk or juice and has been jumping on the bed or roughhousing. The doc says it's no big deal.

Just to clarify on the pyloric stenosis (jidwg's post).

It is typically diagnosed early in life, around 6-8 weeks, and not as late as 4 months. The infant will actually have projectile vomiting vs. spitting up as it is the case with reflux.

Just wanted to ease your mind since it doesn't sound like your baby displays the typical signs for pylor. stenosis.

Yes, and it's perfectly normal. If you think that your baby isn't getting enough in it's system because it's spitting up all the time, dont' worry. Most of what comes up is bodily fluid and not all food/formula/breast milk. Don't think that your baby is undernourished. But, if you like, see a doctor or talk to a nurse.

my son had this problem it was very worrying the doctor told us it was reflux and prescribed gaviscon. the problem was still there sometimes it would be the whole feed that would come back up. then i noticed that the piece of skin underneath your tongue was joined right to the end of my babys tongue i mentioned this at his check as the doctor had not picked up on this .My son then went to hospital to get ii snipped he was in and out in a day was not a painful procedure at all . then when he began feeding everything was ok no more symptoms it had been that because he had not been able to suckle propaplay he had been taking in large amounts of air im not saying your baby has this problem but its worth checking as not one doctor or midwife noticed this .

My son also had that problem and it never went away. The doctor told me to switch formula and we did that, nothing helped. My mother told me also that when I was a baby, I projectile vomited every time I ate, and there was nothing they could do to stop it. Sometimes babies just do that, but I would talk to you r doctor and make sure that everything is normal.

Try sitting your baby up for awhile after he eats, at least 15 minutes, longer if he will. My son done this. I also put a folded towel under the top of his mattress. This helped him to not spit up as much and also helped him sleep better.

My son did that for a while when he was about 6 months old or so. I got concerned and took him to the doctor who after doing X-rays, etc told me it was Reflux. I was told to give him smaller amounts of milk ( formula)more often and to make sure he burped.
