I am trying 2 install XP on an older computer (had windows 98) for my grandaughter 2 use on the internet. Compatability check was ok. Install was ok, but when it trys 2 go into windows for the first time it freezes up. I can go in to safe mode. Device manager shows a yellow "?" for the video driver-VGA compatable. XP has no drivers. Could this be the problem??? Or is it something else? I think that the computer is a home put together from different systems. If this is the problem, where could I possibly find the driver on the internet? The video card is in PCI slot 1 according to device manager. If someone could tell me where 2 look for the slot, maybe I can find the manufacturer if I need 2. First I need 2 know if this is the problem. Please help this poor old Grandma!

I think your hunch is dead on. If you don't know who the manufacturer is, I suggest you just get a new video card.
If you do know, look for updated drivers online. There were many hardware devices that were not XP compliant and were orphaned by the makers. Since a new card is not a great expense, why torture yourself

Grandma Karen,

Take it from a grandpa computer repairman, you have taken on a mighty big project. You may wish to consult a friendly Computer Guy, I'm in the Yellow Pages.

If you want to do it yourself, the first task is to figure out if you have a video card or not. Look where the wire \from your monitor connects to the computer in the back. It may go to a card in a row of cards with their backs facing outwards. If it does, you may be able to open up the box, take out the card, and identify it buy the codes on it. It the monitor plugs into a fitting that is attached to the motherboard, you have to identify the motherboard.

I use a program called Everest, but I don't think it is available anymore. If you really want to get into it, there is a free diagnostic CD called ubcd (Universal Boot CD) that can help you figure out what you have.

Go to that yellow mark right click on it then click update driver but you have to be connected to the Internet, do this with every yellow mark you see there that means driver is installed but it is not compatible.it will work even if you have to reinstall windows.

Maybe your monitor isn't made for Windows XP or the resolution for the monitor is too low but I really don't know
