Surgery and pregnant?

I am scheduled for kidney stone removal through my back under general anastesia. I will only be 7 weeks pregnant at the time of the operation. What is the risk to the baby from the anastesia? Should I wait until the second tirmester? Anyone have surgery while pregnant?

This is a big deal, and your doctors should be having fairly extensive conversations with you. Most doctors like to postpone surgery until after the first trimester, so I'm guessing you've got some siginifcant problems with your kidneys. You need to sit down face-to face with your OB to talk about the risks of anesthesia in the first trimester. You should also discuss the risks after the first trimester, in case you are able to postpone your surgery until then. Your OB should also be communicating with your urologist. Good luck.

Despite recent advances in anesthetic, perinatal, and perioperative care, surgical
intervention during pregnancy may still result in fetal loss from either spontaneous
abortion (especially in the first trimester) or premature labor (especially in the third
trimester). Additionally, there is an increased risk of low birth weight infants
(<2500gm), premature labor and growth-restricted babies with surgical intervention
during pregnancy. Therefore, when ever possible, surgery should be deferred until after
parturition. Unfortunately, urgent surgical intervention in the gravid patient is
occasionally necessary.

What did the dr say? Did you tell the dr you were pg? Is the surgery something that can wait? I'd wait if possible. Good luck! Kidney stones don't sound fun!
