Maybe my brain is just fried but:

7: You have 480 feet of fencing to enclose a rectangular garden. You want the length of the garden to be 30 feet greater than the width. Find the length and width of the garden if you use all the fencing.
a.) 50 ft x 80 ft
b.) 40ft x 80 ft
c.) 135 ft x 105 ft
d.) not enough information given

I think it's D because the width isn't provided. What do you think?

c.

a 50x2+80x2=/=480
b 80-40 =/= 30
c 135-105 = 30 & 2(135+105) = 480

C is the answer. The entire perimeter of the garden in 480 ft. You get that by adding the length and width and multipling it by 2 (because there are 4 sides, not two.)

135 + 105 = 240'
240 x 2 = 480 '
Also note that the length of the garden is 135' and the width is 105'. The difference between the l and w is 30'

Total fence is 480 feet
length to be 30 feet greater than the width
lets assume lenth is L and Width is W
L + W= 240
L = W + 30
substuting the value of L in L + W = 240
gives W + 30 + W = 240
that is 2W + 30 = 240
that is 2W = 240 - 30
that is 2W = 210
that is W = 210/ 2
that is W = 105
then L = W+30
that is L = 105 + 30
that is L = 135 W = 105 so the answer is C

C. 135 + 135 + 105 + 105 = 480

P = 2(l + w)
l = w + 30

480 = 2((w + 30) + w)
240 = w + 30 + w
240 = 2w + 30
2w = 210
w = 105

l = 105 + 30 = 135

ANS : c.)

we know b isn't the answer since 80 - 40 = 20 not 30.

also although 80 - 50 = 30, 2(50 + 80) = 2(130) = 260 and not 480

I would say its C

105 + 105 + 135 + 135 = 480 ft.
plus, 135 is 30 ft greater than 105.

first you have to divide the 480 by 2 because there are 2 sides with the width measurement and 2 with the length measurement.

480/2=240

Then set up the equations.

W+30=L
L+W=240

Try to get both equations to equal L.

W+30=L
240-W=L

Put them together.

W+30=240-W
+W-30=-30+W
2W=210
/2=/2
W=105

The length has to be 30 more than the width so the length is 135 and the width 105.

So the answer is C.

The perimeter p=480ft.
p=2l+2w where l is the length and w is the width.
p=2l+2w
l=w+30
substitute in w+30 for l.
p=2w+2w+60
p-60=4w
since p=480,
420=4w
w=105
l=135
To check, add up the four sides.
135+135+105+105=480 so (c) is the right answer.

actually it's C..

Let x be equal to the width.
(since the length of the garden is 30ft greater than that of the width, we can write)
Let (x+30) be equal to the length

480ft is actaully the perimeter of the rectangular garden.

the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is (2 times length) + (2 times width)

therefore, you can get the equation 2x + 2(30+x) = 480ft

solving this equation, you'll get the answer, x= 105ft which is the width. since length is 30+x, the length is 135ft

hope that helps=)
