Ramadan is the name of the 9th month in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. The religious observances of Ramadan (Arabic: رمضان) occur throughout the entire Islamic calendar month. The calendar month Ramadan, 2006 (1427 AH), according to Saudi Authorities began on September 23 and will end on October 23. Other nations started a day later.

There are some variations regarding the time in which Ramadan's fasting takes place for different muslims around the world. Since the festival is linked to the lunar calendar and the moon is not in the same state at the same time globally, it would depend on which lunar sighting that individual recognises.

The most prominent event of this month is the fasting practiced by all observant Muslims. The fasting during Ramadan has been so predominant in defining the month that some have been led to believe the name of this month, Ramadan, is the name of Islamic fasting, when in reality the Arabic term for fasting is sawm.

Eating, drinking and smoking are not allowed between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib). During Ramadan, Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from sexual intercourse (during fasting), violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, angry and sarcastic retorts, and gossip. People are meant to try to get along with each other better than they normally might. All obscene and irreligious sights and sounds are to be avoided. Purity of both thought and action is important. The fast is an exacting act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to God. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. This is the month which Muslims fast during the day for the whole month. This is also the month which they say satan is being tied up. You can't take it literally. Generally, satan persuade us to commit sins. Therefore, during this month we have to control ourselves by not committing sin. Besides, fasting teaches the Muslims to learn about moderation. Realizing that there are other places where ppl starve to death. It is one of the ways to thank God for all the blessings. It is also for Muslims to learn to be thankful with what they have.THis is because u might have everything now. But, in a split second God can take everything u have n left u nothing. The fast is an exacting act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to God. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm.I also think that, Ramadan is the month that test your strenght ,mentally and physically. To some Muslims, fasting is quite hard. Weak Muslims would find it hard to fast. To those of you out there who never fast, why don't you give it a try!! :)

Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. It is marked by fasting (no food or drink or smoking, etc) during the daylight hours.

The Islamic calendar is not a solar calendar, and so the dates move relative to the Gregorian calendar. This year, Ramadan is from Sept 23 to Oct. 23.

Ramadan is the holy month/holiday that Muslims celebrate annually. During this time, each day, Muslims fast (i.e. don't eat or drink) from sunrise to sunset.

It is a time of love, care, and faith, where we all feel and acknowledge how grateful we are, and to understand the pain of those who are poor. It is a time of respect and a time of overall devout strength.
