Think about it.....forget the fact that both are seminal guitarists, and focus on the voice....especially on the
more mellow songs, but even "after midnight" sounds quite
a bit like townsend as well. What do you folks think?
(and yes kids, this question is way before your time, so
only baby boomers need apply here! LOL)

Guitargadfly, thanks for the funny post.
I seriously had a good laugh, and I do realize that Eric Clapton has never opened
or played a surprise walk-on role with the Who. I've never seen them together on Live Aid as well, of which both appeared in '85.
Things that make you go hmmmm, indeed!
LOL. Seriously, I will grant you that Clapton
copped some style from "Black" blues guitarists, but who, including Keith Richards, and probably yourself. hasn't?
I'm a lifelong Chicagoan, and saw all the
blues greats, from Muddy W to BB King,
to smaller greats on halsted st. Rock itself
is indebted, from the beatles, animals, on down, to 40's-50's Blues.
Now, I digress big time. Pete Townsend is
also the greatest songwriter in the history
of rock. His nuanced emotions, poetic touch, grand flourish, and epic rock opera
adventures are stuff of legend. And of this
date, I know of no blues singer that wrote
a single epic like TOMMY or QUADROPHENIA.....I rest my case....

I think townsend has a higher voice, but they do have similar ranges.

OK baby boomer here! LATE one, but I make the cut!
Clapton and Townsend actually ARE the same person! This has been a heavily guarded secret, and was only hinted at with the release of the Secret Policeman's Ball.
Think about it!!! How often have the SUPPOSEDLY "two" men appeared on stage together? I think NEVER! Because they can't! They're the SAME! MOOOHhHAAAAAAHAHHHHAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!
PS they aren't seminal, IMHO.They both built on prior blues guitarists. They're just POPULAR, and there is a big difference.

I don't think they sound a like. Pete's voice is far more nasal (and you can guess why...). Neither has a very powerful voice, but each is distict.

Pete's voice is deeper and more 'scratchy' (for obvious reasons).....
