I feel it doesn't matter. Most people just learn to put on a front of gaiety in lieu of knowing how else to be genuinely joyful and happy most of the time. Life has too many challenges and constant stressors so that most people buy into this 'cult of glib' because most would be consumed by depression or constant seriousness. It's sort of a compromise between integrity and reality. Just accept it as a personal challenge in your life, to endure falseness in general, but treat specific people with respect. Your integrity of mind and spirit will shine through and perhaps inspire others to bare themselves and be real.

I kind of can but people can't read me. I laugh to be polite and to make everyone feel welcomed, I've gotten so used to it that I don't even know when I'm doing it. But I am definitely not a fake person.

Some Americans think the French are rude-the French think that Americans tend to over exaggerate their happiness with fake smiles and fake laughter. I think being nice is good, but I think fake is just a subtle sign of deception...not harmful in most cases, but just the same, why?

Sometimes. I try not to care too much. Although, I wish that I didn't have to smile so much on a daily basis. Gosh, I think I may be a fake . At least I laugh to be polite....

I can always tell forced gaiety. Usually they don't have the right kind of lisp and don't look butch enough.

Yes.........it is in their eyes.
There can be a smile and dead eyes or a full face of joy.
I can sense when people like me or dislike me.
Being that sensitive allows me to cut through the bull, but is a mixed blessing.

I hope so. As a manager in retail, I have been doing that for years with annoying customers and nutty employees.

I can generally tell by their laugh if they're being fake or not.
